A-Model 1/72 Polikarpov I-16 type 5 Rata Spanish Republic

The arrival of this modern Soviet fighter ensured that the Republican fighter force retained air superiority – only the arrival of the Messerschmitt 109 in the later stages of the war could redress the balance. Type 5, Type 6 and Type 10 saw service in Spain. Some type 10s were licence built by Hispano.

I built this kit in parallel with the Hasegawa kit; despite what other reviewers might say I found it a nice easy little kit, even if slightly more difficult to build than the Hasegawa kit; and besides, Hasegawa do not make an early version suitable for the Spanish Civil War.

  1. Nice entry for the most iconic plane of the conflict (in my opinion).

The beautifull I-16 was called “mosca” by republicans during SCW, because when they were delivered in seaports you can read in the wooden containers “Mockba, CCCP”, Moscow in cyrilic. “Mosca” in spanish is “fly”, beautifull and very poetic coincidence. You can see one restored I-16 in Cuatro Vientos, thanks to Infante de Orleans Foundation
